No one would never think of Cancun as an “it” destination for a luxury hideaway. You might say that Cancun is synonymous with all inclusive and spring break. That is until you start looking for the unique. The strikingly luxurious. A hidden retreat. Just minutes from all the hustle and bustle of Cancun’s hotel zone, lies a place that is fittingly “gem” worthy. It’s Nizuc Resort & Spa. And one of our fave resorts in all of the Cancun/Riviera Maya area!

Nizuc defies the conventional. In a land of mass market all inclusive resorts, a destination complete with a program for overindulgence, Nizuc is a breath of fresh air. A respite from the world’s fast pace. A haven for private times in your very own garden villa. An opportunity for rejuvenation of the body and soul.   Spend the days lounging by a stunningly inviting, private infinity pool or nap in an opulent outdoor living room. Visit the world-class Espa spa or relax on Nizuc’s private beach and sip on expertly prepared beverages from one of the amiable staff members. There’s no rush around here….

Home to 6 world-class restaurants, Nizuc is a culinary destination. A seemingly, secret one at that. Indochine, an Asian Fusion establishment, features the best sushi and sashimi we’ve had the pleasure of sampling in this region. The Hamachi with Jalapeño Vinaigrette and Ponzu even made us head back there for a repeat visit! Each restaurant exudes a different charm. The La Punta Grille sports a Hemingway-esque feel with freshly caught seafood and a rustic island-estate decor. Terra Nostra, the Mediterranean dining venue, overlooks the mangroves and canal, and creates the impression of being transported to another locale. Ramona is an elegantly designed upscale Mexican eatery while Ni dishes up Peruvian favorites. Café de La Playa is the spot for an expansive breakfast offering.  All of these palate-pleasing locations are overseen by top-flights chefs and the Executive Chef Vincent Wallez, a Frenchman that is considered one of the rising stars in food & wine.  The cuisine is a definite high point and a real reason to visit Nizuc.

At Nizuc, resort living is a choice of styles. Choose an ocean-suite for those over age 16 who desire a location close to the main resort area and for the best water views. Ocean suites combine 700 square feet of indoor living with over 200 square feet of terrace or balcony space to take in tropical vistas and soak up the Caribbean sunshine. Or opt for a luxurious villa. Our preference, the Garden Pool Villa, seems a world away. With 1,300 sq feet of indoor living PLUS over 1,000 feet of private courtyard, complete with infinity pool and an outdoor living room, this villa is the ideal abode. Perfect for privacy. Exceptionally designed. A Preferred Pick. And it’s just a short walk to the main resort area. The villas feature indoor and outdoor shower, garden tub, butler service and more!

Nizuc. A place to relax and rejunevate. And….if you feel the urge, there is the option to take part in the on-property activites. On our last visit, several guests partook in paddle boarding on the calm waters that surround Nizuc, while kayaks skimmed the beach on a journey to nowhere. If you are an early-riser, there is a runner’s club and regular morning workout that varies by day. Morning Yoga is a favorite. And Zumba & Salsa classes are a great complement. The evenings revolve around food and drink. However, on Thursday-Sat, the Havana Lounge features Live Cuban Jazz. We found this to be a pleasant surprise and the entertainment was exceptionally good. Like nice cigars? Nizuc features hand-rolled cigars to add to the ambience.

If that’s not enough? A world of Mayan culture, world-class diving, pulsating nightlife and more is just a short drive from the resort.

The best thing about Nizuc? Everything. It’s complete. A complete surprise. A gem in a world of high-rise all inclusives. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle. It’s ok to visit Cancun. If you head to Nizuc…..
